The Brief

Drift Studio is a five-person architecture practice based in Lisbon with a portfolio that spans residential renovations, cultural pavilions, and adaptive reuse projects across Portugal and Spain. Their previous website was a WordPress template from 2019 — functional, forgettable, and entirely at odds with the quality of their work. They came to us wanting something that felt as considered as their buildings.

The Challenge

Architecture portfolios have a problem: every firm shows beautiful photography arranged in a grid. The work disappears into the format. Drift’s challenge wasn’t to show more — it was to slow the viewer down. Their buildings reward patience. The site needed to do the same.

Strategy

We spent two weeks in Lisbon before writing a single line of code. We visited three completed projects, sat in on a client presentation, and reviewed the studio’s archive going back to their founding in 2011. The recurring theme was restraint — in material choice, in structural intervention, in how they speak about their work. The site had to embody that same restraint.

Design Direction

The site is built almost entirely in black, white, and natural paper tones. No colour. No decorative elements. The typography does all the expressive work — a pairing of a wide, high-contrast display serif for project names against a tight, neutral grotesque for body text and navigation. The contrast creates visual interest without decoration.

We introduced slow horizontal scroll for the project archive — a deliberate friction that forces a different pace of consumption. Each project entry shows a single image, the project name, and nothing else. Curiosity has to do the rest.

Scroll Interactions

Project pages open with a full-viewport image that slowly reveals the project name as you scroll — the text emerging letter by letter from beneath the image as if surfacing from concrete. Section transitions use a clip-reveal rather than a fade, a nod to the studio’s preference for exposed structural details. Everything is triggered by scroll position with no autoplay.

Performance

Despite the image-heavy nature of the content, the site loads in under 1.8 seconds on a standard connection. We implemented progressive image loading with low-resolution placeholders and deferred all non-critical assets. The Lighthouse score sits at 97.

Outcome

In the three months following launch, Drift received 14 new project enquiries — more than they had received in the previous year. Two of those have converted to signed commissions. The site was selected for Awwwards Site of the Day and featured in Dezeen’s annual digital design roundup. The studio has since expanded to a seven-person team.
